Pulwama, April 29: Due to persistent rainfall over the past few days, a landslide has been triggered in Khaigaam village, located in the Rajpora tehsil of Pulwama district in South Kashmir.
Residents of this kandi village raised alarm as the downpour led to a landslide in the Mir Mohalla area.
Manzoor Ahmad, a concerned resident of Khaigaam , expressed fear for the safety of their homes situated at a height.
He highlighted the looming threat posed by the landslide, particularly due to its proximity to residential areas.
Ahmad recalled the installation of a protective bund by authorities at the base of the elevation several years ago, which has now been affected by the landslide.
Narrating their harrowing experience, Ahmad mentioned spending a sleepless night outdoors, fearing the land slide might hit their homes.
With apprehensions looming over further rainfall exacerbating the situation, residents have called upon the Deputy Commissioner of Pulwama and the Tehsildar of Rajpora for urgent intervention.
Responding to the distressed appeals, the Tehsildar of Rajpora confirmed that a team of revenue officials, along with volunteers, promptly visited the affected site to assess the situation.
He informed about ongoing monitoring of the situation to mitigate risks and safeguard lives. However, he told Rising Kashmir that with no government buildings nearby, the displaced inhabitants have been temporarily relocated to the homes of their relatives as a precautionary measure against any mishaps.
The reports of landslide were also reported from Lasidaban and Frasipora villages of Pulwama.
Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Dr Basharat Qayoom, said that they have been continuously monitoring the situation and control rooms in the district are functional.
He said that families wherever required have been shifted and there are designated Shelters to deal with any unlikely situation.
The Deputy Commissioner Pulwama also informed that water logging along a portion of Pulwama Awantipora road near Koil village has been taken care of by way of diversion at upstream in Sasara rivulet.
The overflow in the rivulet due to incessant rains had inundated a portion of road in Koil village.
