As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, we are implored to return to the wellspring of wisdom encapsulated in the Holy Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW). Importance of social ethics- principles that promote harmony, mutual respect, and equity in society are central to the Islamic teachings.
The Holy Quran serves as a comprehensive guide for the mankind. It not only outlines religious rituals but underscores the essence of social ethics. Al-Hujurat (49:13) states: “O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.”
This verse underscores the primacy of righteousness and respect for diversity, highlighting the equal worth of all individuals, regardless of their social status or backgrounds. The Holy Quran also advocates for justice, as seen in Al-Nisa (4:135): “O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.”
Here, justice is not only encouraged but mandated, irrespective of personal relationships or status. Similarly, of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) – further exemplifies these social ethics. Through his actions and words (Hadiths), the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) consistently emphasized kindness, humility, and respect for others.
Consider the Hadith narrated by Abu Huraira (RA), “The Prophet said, ‘Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should talk what is good or keep quiet, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not hurt (or insult) his neighbor; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should entertain his guest generously” (Bukhari). This teaching underscores the importance of positive speech, respect for neighbors, and generosity towards guests — all fundamental aspects of social ethics.
The lessons from the Holy Quran and Sunnah are timeless, their relevance undiminished by the passing of centuries. In a world grappling with divisive tendencies, they remind us of the importance of treating others with respect and dignity, practicing justice, and fostering a community built on mutual understanding and cooperation.
In essence, the principles of social ethics espoused by the Holy Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW) transcend religious boundaries. They can serve as a blueprint for a more harmonious global society, where diversity is celebrated, justice is upheld, and every individual is treated with the dignity they deserve. As we move forward, let us remember these teachings and work for the betterment of our society.
