With Eid-ul-Fitr just around the corner, markets across the Kashmir valley witnessed a surge of shoppers on Monday, as people thronged the bustling streets to prepare for the upcoming festival. However, amidst the excitement of shopping, shoppers voiced concerns over the escalating prices of essential commodities.
News agency KNS reported that different markets across the valley were inundated with shoppers, transforming the usually serene streets into vibrant hubs of activity.
The busy thoroughfares of Residency Road, MA Road, and numerous other small and large markets in Srinagar and other district headquarters experienced an influx of customers eager to purchase a variety of goods. Meat, Chicken, Dress materials, children’s clothing, and groceries were among the most sought-after items, with shoppers frantically filling their carts.
Yet, the festive fervor was tinged with frustration as shoppers lamented the significant rise in prices of various commodities.
Many expressed dismay over what they perceived as arbitrary price hikes by traders in anticipation of Eid.
“The concerned authorities are doing nothing to curb this problem. The claims of having constituted market checking squads seem to have fallen flat because the traders have increased prices of commodities arbitrarily,” remarked Shabir Ahmad, a disgruntled customer at Lal Chowk.
The surge of shoppers resulted in traffic jams in some areas, particularly along the routes, where crowds thronged to make their purchases.
Despite the congestion, the streets were alive with the vibrant energy of families, with children eagerly selecting toys, colorful clothes, and footwear.
However, the influx of shoppers posed challenges for law enforcement officials tasked with managing traffic flow.
In response to concerns raised by shoppers, officials from the food department assured that market checking squads had been deployed across Srinagar and other areas of the valley.
These teams had reportedly imposed fines on traders found violating price regulations. “If they (shoppers) find any trader or shopkeeper selling commodities at higher prices, they should contact us. We will take action against them,” stated one of the officials of the food department.
As the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr draws nearer, the fervent activity and bustling energy within markets persist unabated.
The anticipation and excitement among shoppers intensified, driving crowds to throng the streets and marketplaces in search of essentials and festive adornments.
Vendors diligently attend to the demands of customers, showcasing a diverse array of goods ranging from traditional attire to delectable treats, creating an immersive sensory experience that encapsulates the spirit of celebration.(KNS)
