Srinagar, Feb 06: A delegation from the Kashmir Houseboat Owners Association (KHBOA) led by its chairman Manzoor Ahmad Pakhtoon met with MLA Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq to discuss various long-pending issues affecting the houseboat industry.
The delegation presented a memorandum highlighting key concerns that require immediate attention from the government. One of the primary issues raised was the rehabilitation of houseboat owners before the introduction of cruise boats on the Jhelum River.
The houseboat owners expressed fears that the existing boats would not be able to withstand the impact of the larger cruise vessels. They also called for the swift implementation of a 2022 government order regarding timber supply, which has not been fully enacted, affecting vital repairs to the houseboats.
Other demands included the restoration and proper fencing of boatyards in Dal and Nigeen Lakes, which are crucial for repairs and maintenance of the houseboats. The delegation also requested the allocation of a tourism promotion space at Nowgam Railway Station to enhance visibility for Kashmir’s iconic houseboats. Additionally, they sought stricter measures to curb illegal sand mining near the houseboats, which has led to environmental damage.
MLA Tanvir Sadiq assured the delegation of his full support, promising to raise these concerns both in the Assembly and with party leader Omar Abdullah. He assured that an offline issuance system for necessary materials would be pushed to avoid delays. Sadiq also promised a more efficient, single-window system for the renewal of houseboat licenses and repairs.
Expressing optimism after the meeting, the houseboat owners are hopeful that their long-standing issues will finally be addressed, ensuring the preservation and sustainability of Kashmir’s unique houseboat heritage.
Sadiq reiterated the commitment of the NC leadership to fight for these demands until they are fully resolved.
