New Delhi, Dec 10: The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) convened in New Delhi and issued a comprehensive statement covering various national and international issues.
In a statement, the Polit Bureau said, “The BJP secured a decisive victory in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, consolidating its core Hindutva vote. The Congress, while maintaining its vote share, lost governments in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. The BJP’s success is attributed to media control, financial resources, and exploiting caste divisions. In Telangana, the Congress triumphed over the TRS/BRS government, but the BJP strengthened its position.”
The Polit Bureau emphasized the need for secular democratic forces to intensify efforts in defending people’s livelihood, democratic rights, civil liberties, and the secular democratic character of the Indian Republic.
With the delimitation process completed and claims of restored peace, the Polit Bureau demanded immediate Assembly elections in J&K due since 2018. Criticizing recent amendments to the Kashmir Reorganization Act, the Polit Bureau deemed them undemocratic and urged nominations to the elected assembly to be made by the elected legislature, not the Lt Governor.
The Polit Bureau raised concerns about three Bills introduced by the Modi government to replace the existing Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act. Highlighting flaws with potential consequences for democratic rights and civil liberties, the Polit Bureau demanded the referral of these Bills to a Joint Select Committee for thorough scrutiny before enactment.
Expressing deep concern, the Polit Bureau addressed the extensive damage caused by Cyclone Michaung in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, resulting in numerous casualties, destroyed crops, and property damage. Criticizing the central government’s delayed interim funds, the Polit Bureau urged generous resources for rehabilitation and technical support.
Strongly condemning Israel’s genocidal assaults on Palestinians, claiming over 17,000 lives, with a majority being women and children, the Polit Bureau criticized the US veto obstructing a UN Security Council resolution for an immediate ceasefire. It called on the Modi government to demand an immediate ceasefire and join the global outcry against ethnic cleansing.
The CPI(M) Central Committee is scheduled to meet from January 28-30, 2024, at Thiruvananthapuram.
