Pulwama, July 27: High temperature and lack of soil moisture amidst a prolonged dryness is threatening almond orchards across South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Horticulture experts warn that the ongoing hot and dry weather could significantly damage the almond crop if it persists.
Experts said that for the past four months, the region has experienced no substantial precipitation, leading to a significant depletion of soil moisture.
Mohammad Shafi, a Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) with Horticulture Department Kashmir posted in Pulwama, highlighted the impact of this prolonged dry period on local almond farming.
He noted that approximately 3000 kanals of Karewa land in the district are dedicated to almond cultivation.
However, almost 99 percent of this land relies solely on rainwater, with limited irrigation facilities available, he narrated.
“Intense heat wave and lack of moisture have caused dryness in the twigs and leaves of almond trees. The hulls of the fruits are also affected,” Shafi said after inspecting the orchards.
He emphasised the urgency of the situation, noting that orchardists could face substantial losses if the current weather conditions persist for another two weeks.
To mitigate the impact, Shafi advised orchardists to adopt moisture-preserving measures. He recommended mulching with black poly film, paddy straw, or poplar leaves during March and April.
“Mulching helps retain moisture and reduce stress caused by dry spells,” he explained. Shafi also advised painting large cuts induced during pruning with Chaubatia paste to prevent moisture loss and removing weeds near tree trunks, as they increase moisture loss through transpiration.
Shafi highlighted the critical period of bud formation in almond trees, which begins in July and August.
“If the hot and dry weather continues for 20 to 25 days, bud formation will be affected, impacting next year’s crop,” he said.
However, he added that rainfall within the next week could alleviate the stress on almond trees and prevent further damage.
