Leh, Oct 09: The Department of Health, Ladakh, has introduced a comprehensive health initiative in schools across Leh district, aimed at enhancing the physical and mental well-being of children and adolescents. The initiative integrates key national programs, including the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK), National Mental Health Program, and National Tobacco Control Program.
At an event held at Lamdon Model Senior Secondary School, Dr. Iqbal Ahmad, Medical Officer and Dr. Tundup Dawa, Medical Officer pediatric health experts, outlined the significance of RBSK, which screens children from birth to 18 years for 32 health conditions, including defects at birth, deficiencies, diseases, and developmental delays. They emphasized the importance of early detection and intervention, with screenings conducted by Mobile Health Teams, ensuring free and equitable access to treatment.
Psychologist Phunchok Diskit, who spoke on the National Tobacco Control Program, highlighted the dangers of tobacco use, cancer risks and harmful chemicals.
RKSK Counselor Diskit Angmo discussed puberty-related challenges, while Clinical Psychologist Mariyah Samreen addressed mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, highlighting the need for early intervention. One-on-one counseling sessions were provided for students identified by the School Health and Wellness Ambassadors. A total of 37 students received individual counseling from Tanveer Ahmad, AFHC Counselor, Diskit Angmo, AFHC Counselor, and Mariyah Samreen, Clinical Psychologist..
This initiative underscores the Department of Health’s commitment to fostering the overall well-being of Ladakhi youth by integrating vital physical and mental health services in schools.
