Srinagar, Jun 13: People’s Democratic Front (PDF) president and former minister, Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen on Friday condemned the international community’s silence over Israel’s recent military strikes on Iran, drawing sharp comparisons with the global response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In a statement issued here, Yaseen questioned the glaring inconsistency in the way Western powers react to conflicts based on geopolitical interests.
He said while nations like the United States and European Union had been quick to unite and denounce Russia for its military action in Ukraine, they have remained conspicuously quiet over Israel’s aggression toward Iran.
“The same international community that stood united against Russia’s actions in Ukraine is now mute when Israel carries out military operations against Iran. This silence exposes a dangerous double standard,” he said.
The PDF chief said the comparison between the two conflicts is not only valid but also revealing of how selective global diplomacy has become.
“When it comes to Israel, there is silence; when it’s Russia, there is outrage. This hypocrisy cannot be ignored,” he added.
The former minister said such selective outrage erodes the moral authority of international institutions and undermines the global commitment to justice, peace, and sovereignty.
“If the world continues to pick and choose where international law should apply, it risks further destabilising already volatile regions and alienating populations that are directly impacted by conflict,” he said.
Hakeem urged the United Nations, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and leading international human rights bodies to break their silence and take a principled stand against all forms of aggression, regardless of the country involved.
“True justice means being consistent. If aggression is wrong in Ukraine, it is equally wrong in Iran. There can be no two sets of rules,” Yaseen asserted.
