Srinagar, June 18: Gusty winds severely damaged four rooftops of houses on Sunday evening in the Batagund village of Mawer in north Kashmir’s Handwara area of Kupwara district.
Local residents told Rising Kashmir that strong winds wreaked havoc in the area. “The powerful gusts struck the locality during the evening hours, resulting in damage to four residential houses. Unfortunately, two people were also injured in the incident,” they said.
One of the injured women, identified as Sharifa Begum, was immediately moved to the hospital to receive medical treatment for her injuries, where her condition is said to be stable.
The other injured person Muntazir Ahmad Malla, a ten-year-old boy, sustained minor injuries. Additionally, the affected families, who reside in Batagund, have made an earnest appeal to the local administration to provide assistance during these challenging times.
The affected house owners have been identified as Sonullah Malla, son of Late Mohammad Shaban Malla; Habibullah Shiekh, son of Mohd Abdullah Shiekh; Mushtaq Ahmad Wani, son of Mohammad Sultan Wani; and Ghulam Rasool War, and son-in-law of Mohammad Rajab Shiekh.
Sonullah Malla said he has yet to shift to his new house; however, the gusty winds have “completely damaged it”, leaving him in distress.
According to the affected house owners, they are now dealing with the aftermath of the incident, facing the task of repairing and restoring their damaged houses.
“The extent of the damage caused by the powerful winds has created a sense of urgency, prompting the affected families to seek assistance from the local administration,” they said, adding, “We hope the authorities will respond promptly to our pleas, and provide necessary assistance to help us overcome this difficult situation.”
