Srinagar, June 24:

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to re-establishing Gulmarg as a premier global golfing destination.

Speaking at the Gulmarg Golf Championship award function, where golfers and hoteliers were recognised for their contributions, Omar announced a series of ambitious plans aimed at revitalising tourism, improving infrastructure, and encouraging greater youth involvement in sports.

“We aim to develop Gulmarg as a world-class golf destination once again. Golf infrastructure and tournaments will be given special attention to position Jammu and Kashmir as a leading golfing destination worldwide,” said Omar Abdullah, who also holds the Tourism portfolio.

The Chief Minister emphasised the immense economic and tourism potential of Gulmarg, highlighting+ its ability to attract high-spending visitors. “Golfers are not just here to play—they stay in hotels, they explore the area, they shop. We need to create a holistic experience that encourages them to return year after year,” he said.

Reflecting on the past glory of the Gulmarg Golf Course, once a favorite of India’s top golfers, Omar acknowledged the decline in its condition. “The names of some of the greatest professional and amateur golfers are etched on the walls of the Gulmarg Club. Unfortunately, neglect set in over time. But we are determined to restore its former glory,” he added.

Omar Abdullah also praised the work of local MLA Farooq Ahmad Shah, urging a tourist-friendly attitude among stakeholders. “Each tourist should be treated as a potential repeat visitor, and their satisfaction must be our benchmark,” he emphasized.

Earlier, Omar visited the newly constructed Gulmarg Convention Centre, calling it a “magnificent property” complete with an auditorium, meeting halls, guest rooms, and dining facilities. He suggested that adding evening entertainment options, such as movie screenings, coffee shops, and restaurants, would help transform Gulmarg into an “all-encompassing destination.”

In a major announcement, the Chief Minister revealed that the government is actively considering the creation of a Jammu and Kashmir Golf Development Authority to oversee and maintain golf courses in Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and Sidhra (Jammu). “We need a focused, professional approach to maintaining our greens and fairways. There should be a clear distinction between the fairways and the roughs,” he stated.

Praising his father, former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah, for his role in introducing golf to the region, Omar spoke of his own desire to carry forward this legacy.

As part of efforts to boost winter tourism, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for a 726-meter ski drag lift at Kongdoori, with an estimated cost of ₹6.84 crore. Additionally, a ₹50 lakh scheme was launched for the development of the Seven Springs water body, a popular tourist spot.

During a visit to Kongdoori, Omar was warmly greeted by tourists who praised the government’s efforts to rejuvenate the tourism sector. A delegation of ponywalas also met the Chief Minister, expressing concerns about the reopening of major tourist spots. Omar assured them that their issues would be addressed step by step.

The local community welcomed the new projects with enthusiasm. “These initiatives are a game-changer,” said hotelier Tariq Ahmad. “Luxury tourists bring significant economic value not just to hotels but to the entire town.”

Shabir Lone, a café owner opposite the golf course, highlighted the benefits of the new projects for off-season tourism. “The ski lift and convention center will help attract visitors even during the off-season months, ensuring business throughout the year,” he said.
