Pulwama, Feb 24: In a significant move towards bolstering industrial growth and employment opportunities in Jammu and Kashmir, the government is working on developing 46 industrial estates across the union territory.
Commissioner Secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce, Vikramjit Singh, revealed this development during a media interaction in Pulwama district, where he chaired a public darbar programme.
Singh disclosed that out of the proposed 46 industrial estates, 15 have already received approval from the Administrative Council (AC) in recent days.
He said that the Central Government has launched an industrial development scheme worth ₹18,400 crore aimed at propelling industrial growth in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The aim of this scheme is to give an impetus to industrial development in Jammu and Kashmir so that the UT can match the development standards of other parts of the country,” he said.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to youth employment, Singh announced that approximately 2100 schemes have been sanctioned under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Despite constituting only 1% of the total population, Jammu and Kashmir boasts the highest number of PMEGP schemes in the country,” he said.
Moreover, the Commissioner Secretary unveiled the Regional Employment Generation Programme (REGP) at the UT level, aimed at creating new industrial units while ensuring environmental sustainability.
Singh lauded the proactive approach of the local administration in Pulwama, particularly commending DC Dr. Basharat Qayoom for implementing an effective mechanism for grievance redressal.
“The administration of Pulwama is the most responsive among all districts I have visited so far,” remarked Singh, expressing confidence that the time-bound action plan adopted by the Pulwama administration will swiftly address public grievances raised during the public darbar.
