Srinagar, Aug 06: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday welcomed the three-day visit of the Election Commission of India to J&K hoping that the commission would announce the much anticipated Assembly elections in J&K.
Speaking to the media persons here, Dr Farooq emphasised the critical importance of conducting much-awaited free and fair elections in the region. “It is imperative that the commission does not repeat such errors, as they have the potential to undermine the fragile peace that remains in the region. It is essential that the commission upholds its duty to ensure transparent and unbiased elections to maintain the integrity of the democratic process,” he said.
When questioned about the recent events unfolding in Bangladesh, the NC Chief strongly urged the Union government to exercise caution regarding the situation on its eastern border. “In light of the ongoing turmoil in our neighbouring country, it is imperative that the government proceed with caution. The events in Bangladesh should serve as a wake-up call not only for the nation itself but for the entire global community,” he said.
He added, “The uprising led by disgruntled youth resulting in the overthrow of a government is a stark reminder of the power of the youth. The lava has been brewing for a long, fueled by the injustices suffered by Muslims worldwide. There is a limit to patience, and the simmering discontent has been brewing for far too long.”
Dr Abdullah emphasised the importance of maintaining cordial relations with all neighbouring countries. “It is imperative to strengthen SAARC. I trust that Bangladesh will maintain positive relations with India,” he said.
Meanwhile, the NC President and Vice President, Omar Abdullah express grief over the passing of the wife of former MLA Sangrama, Shaheed Haji Ghulam Rasool Bhat.
The duo offered their heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the grieving family and prayed for strength during this challenging time. Dr Farooq personally reached out to the bereaved family via a phone call to share in their sorrow, the party said in a statement.
North Zone President Javed Dar led a delegation of party functionaries to pay their respects and offer condolences to the mourning family. Khwaja Yaqoob Wani and Ghulam Hassan Rahi, among others, joined him on this visit. “Together, they prayed for the departed soul and stood in solidarity with the grieving family,” the statement said.
