Handwara, Dec 07: Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara achieved a major milestone by successfully performing a microscopic tympanomastoidectomy surgery using a newly acquired operating microscope.
The landmark procedure was conducted under the leadership of Principal Prof. Khurshid, Medical Superintendent Dr. Ajaz, and Prof. Fayaz, with the surgical team led by ENT Surgeon Dr. Tajamul (Assistant Professor ENT), Dr. Haris (Senior Resident ENT), and Anesthetist Dr. Reyaz, supported by the operating theatre team.
Dr Aijaz Bhat, Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Handwara, highlighted that such advanced surgeries are usually conducted in Srinagar hospitals. “Our ENT professor has performed this surgery at GMC Handwara, which is commendable. We have conducted other such surgeries in the past and will continue to deliver the best care for patients in North Kashmir,” he said.
The ENT Professor Dr Tajamul, who performed the surgery told Rising Kashmir that the procedure was time-intensive and required unwavering support from the hospital administration. He assured residents of Handwara and Kupwara that they would no longer need to travel to other hospitals for such surgeries.
Dr. Riyaz Qadri, Anesthetist, stated that these surgeries can be safely performed on both elderly patients and children. “We have a highly qualified team capable of handling any surgery at GMC Handwara,” he added.
While lauding the medical achievement, locals have raised concerns over the lack of space in the hospital. They urged authorities to expedite the full shift to the nearly complete 200-bedded hospital building. They also demanded the operating theatre be made functional 24×7 to manage the growing influx of patients.
