Anantang, Aug 19: The Department of Ophthalmology at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has performed over 68 squint surgeries since its establishment in 2019, benefitting patients across different age groups.Squint surgery is carried out to straighten the eyes when they point in different directions. During the procedure, the surgeon adjusts the eye muscles so the eyes move together and appear aligned. It can be performed on both children and adults.Dr. Rayees Ahmad, Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology, said that between 2019 and December 2024, the department successfully performed 68 such surgeries.“Squint surgery not only corrects misalignment of the eyes for cosmetic purposes and helps address related social stigma, but is also crucial for preventing long-term visual impairment in children. Early intervention plays a vital role in a child’s visual development, making this service particularly impactful,” he said. The availability of these procedures at GMC Anantnag has significantly reduced the need for referrals to tertiary care centres in Srinagar and other cities, particularly benefitting patients from South Kashmir and adjoining areas.Previously, many patients had to travel to cities such as Amritsar and other major centres outside J&K, which consumed both time and money. “Individuals from remote locations such as Ramban, Kokernag, Kishtwar, Gool, Banihal, and across Anantnag district have availed themselves of this vital service,” Dr. Ahmad added.Dr Mohd Yousuf, Associate Professor and Head of the Ophthalmology Department, commended his team for this achievement, noting that the department is steadily progressing in both patient care and medical education.Dr Showkat Hussain Tali, Media Coordinator GMC Anantnag, said the department also extends its gratitude to Principal Prof. Dr. Ruksana Najeeb for her unwavering support and leadership, which has been instrumental in enhancing both patient care and academic excellence at GMC Anantnag.
