Srinagar, Sep 09: A Kashmiri play titled ‘Gindaan Tamash’ written by Dr Sohan Lal Koul and directed by Showkat Usman under the banner of theatre group ‘Curtain Call’ was played at Tagore Hall Srinagar on September 07.
The play was about two persons who have lost their memories and are trying to reconstruct their existence. ‘Gindaan Tamash’ is a postmodern theatrical expression that explores themes of memory, transformation, and the essence of self. It also provides whimsical and engaging experiences of two characters who find themselves in a loss of memory state.
They try to explore their being but they fail, they talk of eternal questions like death and their existence. The place has a window and they know if they open it, death will enter the place. So far the window is closed they are safe, but their own greed and cruel approach make them open it. Death really enters and takes along one and gives a second chance to another but he ironically says he never wanted a second chance. What he wanted was to know ‘who he is, where from he has come, and where he is set to go’.
These eternal questions remain there. The audience is also left with a thought-provoking message about the transformative power of imagination and the essence of identity. The play has a universal theme and tends to evoke some philosophical issues.
The play is written in a very simple theatrical technique surely to set a new trend in the theatre of Kashmir. The audience from all walks of life appreciated the entire cast of the play.
