Jammu, Feb 17: GGM Science College Jammu, in collaboration with the Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (JPDCL), Monday conducted a one-day awareness programme on the “PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana”. The event aimed to educate students, faculty, and the general public about the benefits and implementation of the government’s solar energy initiative.
The programme commenced with a welcome address from Prof. Rajesh Bhardwaj, Convener of the Solar Energy Awareness Programme Committee, who thanked Dr. Romesh Kumar Gupta, the College Principal, for his continued support. Dr. Vandana Khajuria, Vice Principal, emphasised the importance of solar system installations at households, underlining their role in reducing reliance on conventional energy sources and promoting environmental sustainability.
Mohd Ashraf (AEE) from the Power Development Department (PDD) gave a detailed presentation on the scheme’s objectives, financial benefits, and the significant role of solar energy in sustainable development. He pointed out that a 10-kw rooftop solar system can eliminate around 4 tons of carbon emissions annually, which is equivalent to planting 100 trees each year. He also highlighted that the carbon footprint of rooftop solar panels is 20 times lower than that of coal in terms of CO₂ emissions. Sheetal Koul (AEE) further elaborated on the workings of rooftop solar panels, explaining how excess energy is transferred to the national grid, reducing consumers’ electricity bills. She also discussed the long-term benefits of solar energy over other energy sources such as hydropower, thermal power, and hydrocarbons.
