GDC Sogam organizes seminar on ‘Embrace Equity to Empower Women’

Srinagar, March 08: Srinagar, March 08: A seminar “Embrace Equity to Empower Women” was held at Government Degree College Sogam on Wednesday in connection with International Women’s Day. The event was jointly organized by the Departments of Islamic Studies, Political Science and English in collaboration with the Debates & Seminar Committee (D&SC) of the college.
Dr Shamim Ahmad Dar, Principal, GDC Sogam, was the patron of the event. Prof. Mehbooba Bano, Associate Professor, Political Science; Dr Tauseef Ahmad Parray, Associate Professor Islamic Studies and Convener, Media Cell; and Prof Ishfaq Hussain, Associate Professor English and Convener, D≻ were the conveners of the event.
The event started with the recitation of the Qur’anic verses by Mr Abid Hussain Lone, BA 5th Semester student, followed by Naat by Ms Shabeena Hasan, BA 5th Semester. The event was moderated by Prof. Ishfaq Hussain Bhat. Moreover, Dr Tauseef Ahmad was the key resource person of the event who delivered a talk on “Gender Equ(al)ity and Women Empowerment” as well as presented the seminar introduction. With reference to Embrace Equity theme, he said: “Let’s embrace equity not just on this day, but every day; for equity is not just nice-to-have, it’s a must-have.”
In the event, ten students from the 6th, 5th and 4th semesters presented their speeches on three given topics viz. Women Empowerment: Religious Perspective, Women Empowerment in the light of Indian Constitution and Empowering Women by Embracing Equity. The student speakers were judged by a three-member jury, namely Prof. Mehbooba Bano (who also presented Presidential Remarks as Vice-Principal), Dr Mukhtar Ahmad Bhat, Senior Assistant Professor Botany; and Dr M. Imran Malik, Assistant Professor Geography, who also presented Remarks on behalf of jury.
In this competition, Ms Salmah Jahangeer, BSc 4th semester, Ms Ruqaya Mushtaq, BA 5th Semester and Ms Adfar Farooq, BA 5th Semester, bagged the first three positions respectively.
The mementos and certificates of participation were distributed among the three position holders and the participants. The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Bhat. Over 100 students and all the staff members participated in the seminar.
