GDC Baramulla seminar: ‘Organic agriculture has immense potential for employment’

Baramulla, May 13: The Department of Botany, Government Degree College (GDC) Baramulla in collaboration with NSS organised a one-day seminar on ‘Organic Vegetables As Sustainable Agriculture’ on Saturday.
The event, organised under the theme of ‘Earth Go Green’, formally started in the botanical garden of the college and was inaugurated by the Principal Prof Dr Muhammad Farooq Rather.
Prof Rather on the occasion said that organic agriculture has the potential for employment and plays a greater role in catering to the quality and nutritional requirements.
The event began with the welcome address by Prof Dr Nuzhat Jabeen who welcomed all the attendees including guests, faculty and students. Vice Principal Prof Tariq Ahmad Chalkoo while highlighting the scope of organic farming said that organic agriculture has an immense potential for employment generation particularly for agri-entrepreneurs.
Subject Matter Specialist, Harvinder Singh Sidhu discussed various technical issues regarding the setting up of an organic farm, its organic certification and marketing. 
Agriculture Extension Officer Baramulla Mubashir Sultan informed the audience about various organic clusters established in the district. He spoke about numerous success stories regarding organic farming at various places like Chakla Uri, Saderbal, Janbazpora, etc. Sultan invited students to visit the organic farms in the district for a larger participation and awareness about organic agriculture. 
At the end of the seminar, a memento was presented to Harvinder Singh Sidhu by Vice Principal. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Massarat Geelani, Head Department of Urdu. She also expressed her gratitude to all the speakers, participants and students.
