Baramulla, Apr 13: Government Degree College Baramulla’s Botany Department in collaboration with Social Forestry Division Baramulla observed World Arbor Day on Thursday under the theme of Green Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) drive, which was aimed at the plantation of around two hundred conifer plants inside the campus.
World Arbor Day is celebrated in the month of April every year that marks the planting of trees.
The college authorities, including Principal Prof. Farooq Ahmad Rather, Staff Secretary Prof Tariq Chalkoo, HOD Botany Dr. Nuzhat Jabeen and other Head of Departments with their faculty members along with National Cadet Corps (NCC) and NSS students were present in the event. It was held in the company of Divisional Forest Officer Baramulla, Parvez Ahmad Wani and Range Officer Forest Department Baramulla, Rameez Raja.
Rameez Raja, RFO Baramulla, said, “Our government implemented the Green India Mission, a national-level programme, under Green J&K drive theme. We are targeting the plantation of 1.5 crore plants under this mission this year, and we have already planted around 1 crore.”
Around two hundred conifers were planted inside the campus at the hands of different professors. Professor Mohammad Farooq Rather, Principal GDC Baramulla, said these events will help the campus become green and clean. “As long as greenery is everywhere, we are alive,” he said.
Prof Tariq Chalkoo, Staff Secretary, said there is a need for tree plantation to improve the ambiance in our surroundings in every year.
Dr Nuzhat Jabeen, Head of Botany Department and convener of the event said, “We get a few chances in which we can show care to the plants and environment. Arbor Day is usually celebrated on the last Friday of April but plantations can vary from different seasons. In order to show care for plants, we gathered here along with all the professors of the campus for the plantation drive.”
