Bandipora, May 20: Long queues were observed in the Naidkhai Sonawari assembly segment of Bandipora, a village of former Member of Parliament and senior National Conference leader Mohammad Akbar Lone. Locals said they voted for development and young leadership so that their voices can be heard.
Two polling stations were set up at Government Higher Secondary School Naidkhai.
Shakir Ahmad, who cast his vote early morning said Naidkhai deserves better amenities. “We are looking for fresh, dynamic leadership to address our concerns effectively. Voting today is our chance to ensure our voices count in the decisions that shape our community’s future,” he said.
Another young voter Shahid Ahmad said he voted for development. He said there is a need for better roads and schools in the locality. “I want leaders who understand our struggles and can bring real change. It is time for new faces and fresh ideas. Our voices matter, and we need leaders who listen,” he added.
Shahid said despite having good leadership of the village in Parliament, many issues in the village remained unresolved. “Our village needs better healthcare and employment opportunities. We need leaders who can bridge the gap between generations and truly represent our aspirations for a brighter future,” he added.
Another local, Sara Ali said that over the past 70 years, there has been no development in the area. “It is time we entrust the reins of power to fresh faces, untainted by the mistakes of the past,” she said. “These new leaders can give voice to the aspirations of Kashmiris, advocating for our region’s needs on a national stage. We have to empower them to champion the cause of Kashmir with vigour and determination.”
Sara mentioned that among the four main political candidates, there are many young faces in the fray for Baramulla PC. It is great to have younger leaders representing us in parliament instead of only older ones, she added.
Akbar Lone comes from Naidkhai village and has held the seat for many years. He has been involved in politics for almost five decades.
