Pulwama, Apr 10: Renowned Consultant Physician, Dr Nisar Ahmad Trali on Monday delivered a lecture on the benefits of fasting, here at the Government Degree College Pampore.
The Ramadan lecture was organised by the college’s Department of Islamic Studies in which a number of students and faculty members participated.
Dr Nisar, who is the author of several books and a social activist, counted many benefits of fasting during the month of Ramadan. He said fasting increases the production of magnesium within the body.
“Magnesium is cardioprotective. These days we witness a surge in heart attacks most particularly among young people. Fasting reduces the chances of heart attacks,” he said.
Besides heart health, magnesium is also beneficial for relieving muscle cramps in the legs, relieving asthma patients and helps in preventing stillbirths, miscarriage and uterine hemorrhage in women, he said.
The physician said that fasting also reduces the chances of brain stroke. “Thrombosis of blood vessels supplying blood to the brain causes brain stroke,” he said, adding that fasting has an anti-platelet effect thereby reducing chances of the brain stroke.
Dr Nisar said that fasting also relieves neuropathy which is characterised by weakness, numbness and pain in feet and hands. He counted many other medicinal benefits of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.
“Fasting is beneficial for obese and Type-2 diabetic patients as it reduces cholesterol and raised blood sugar levels,” he said, adding, “Fasting along with night prayers of Taraweeh and recitation of the holy Quran increases adrenaline and noradrenaline levels in the muscular-skeletal system due to which one gets de-stressed and feels happy and relaxed.”
