Perched atop the Zabarwan mountain range and overlooking the city of Srinagar, this seven-terraced Mughal garden offers a breathtaking view of Dal Lake and the surrounding landscapes. Pari Mahal’s unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty makes it a prime destination for visitors seeking to explore the rich heritage of Kashmir. This summer, Pari Mahal, also known as the Palace of Fairies, has seen a significant influx of tourists.
Pari Mahal stands as a testament to the grandeur of Mughal architecture and the aesthetic sensibilities of the era. Originally a Buddhist monastery, it was converted into a garden by Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The garden served as a retreat where Dara Shikoh studied astrology and engaged in intellectual pursuits. The terraced design, adorned with vibrant flowers and lush greenery, reflects the Mughal mastery in garden design, emphasizing harmony with nature.
Chashma Shahi, or Chashma i Shahi, meaning the royal spring, is another remarkable Mughal garden built in 1632 AD by Ali Mardan Khan, a governor under Shah Jahan. Located near Raj Bhawan (Governor’s house) and overlooking Dal Lake, this garden was a gift from Shah Jahan to his eldest son, Dara Shikoh. Chashma Shahi is the smallest among the three famous Mughal gardens in Srinagar, covering an area of one acre with dimensions of 108 meters in length and 38 meters in width.
The garden’s centerpiece is a spring, around which it was constructed, offering visitors a serene and picturesque environment. The meticulously maintained flowerbeds, cascading fountains, and terraced lawns showcase the Mughal dedication to creating paradisiacal spaces. Chashma Shahi’s proximity to Pari Mahal adds to the allure of the region, allowing tourists to explore multiple historical sites within a short distance.
Recent years have seen a noticeable increase in tourism to Kashmir, with visitors flocking to Pari Mahal, Chashma Shahi, the Botanical Garden, and other notable attractions. This surge in tourism highlights the region’s potential as a premier travel destination, blending natural beauty with historical significance. Many tourists from Delhi and other parts of India have expressed their sense of safety and enjoyment during their stay in Kashmir.
One tourist from Delhi shared with Rising Kashmir, “We feel very safe in Kashmir. The beauty of the mountains and Dal Lake is beyond words. It’s been a wonderful experience.” Another couple from New Delhi echoed this sentiment, stating, “Kashmir is one of the best trips for enjoyment. We have visited the beautiful mountains, Dal Lake, and performed Yatra. It’s the best experience of our trip.”
Despite the positive experiences, some visitors have noted a need for better informational resources at Pari Mahal. “The Department should deploy guides or post signboards at Pari Mahal so that everyone can learn about these heritage sites,” suggested one tourist. Addressing this feedback could significantly enhance the visitor experience, providing deeper insights into the historical and cultural importance of these sites.
Established in 1969, the Botanical Garden in Srinagar is another major attraction for nature lovers. Situated around the base of a hill overlooking Dal Lake, the garden boasts a collection of about 150,000 ornamental plants and a vast array of oak varieties. It also houses a rare collection of Kashmiri tropical plants, making it a haven for botanists and horticulturists.
The Botanical Garden is divided into four main sections: the Plant Introduction Centre, the Research Section, the Recreational Garden, and the Botanical Garden. Each section offers unique insights into the diverse plant life and ongoing research efforts to preserve and study the region’s flora.
The increasing popularity of Pari Mahal, Chashma Shahi, and other attractions in Kashmir underscores the region’s appeal as a destination that seamlessly blends historical grandeur with natural splendor. As tourism continues to grow, enhancing informational resources and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of visitors will be crucial in maintaining Kashmir’s status as a top travel destination. Through these efforts, tourists can fully appreciate the rich cultural heritage and unparalleled beauty that Kashmir has to offer.
