Obesity is a common and serious condition that affects many people all around the world.  It can increase your risk of physical health conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes, Heart attack, Stroke, Certain cancers. It may also increase your risk of severe complications if you develop COVID-19, a coronavirus-caused disease. Obesity is linked to an increased risk of mental health disorders, in addition to physical health problems.
Obesity has been linked to mood and anxiety disorders in several studies. This means that being obese increases your chances of developing a mental health condition such as depression or anxiety.
You might be wondering whether obesity causes mental health problems or vice versa. The nature of the relationship between obesity and mental health varies by individual. Emotional distress can lead to overeating in some people. Food can be used to cope with stress, which can lead to excess weight gain and obesity. Others may experience emotional distress as a result of their obesity.
Being overweight can result in negative self-esteem. People who are overweight may face judgement or stigma from others. These experiences can have a negative impact on one’s self-esteem. Obese people may find it difficult to engage in positive activities, making it difficult to cope with negative emotions. Obesity is also linked to having more physical health issues and pain, which can increase stress. A variety of practical and societal factors can contribute to mental health problems in obese patients. These are some examples:

Quality of life: Men and women who are severely overweight oftenhave problems with physical and professional performance, both because of their size and because of chronic conditions. Being physically unable to do the things you love like attending fun events, traveling, or visiting friends and family can lead to social isolation, loneliness, and greater difficulty coping with life’s difficulties to finish. Chronic pain alone has been linked to depression.

Weight bias and discrimination: One of the largest demanding situations for theonessufferingwith weight troubles is society’s terrible views on weight problems. Weight bias refers back to the stereotypes and attitudes that outline humans with weight problems as unattractive, lazy, and undisciplined. These negative misperceptions maybe sizable inside families, amongst peers, within the workplace. They can cause discriminatory conduct that impacts a person’s self-esteem, employment opportunities, or even the best of healthcare they receive.

Poor body image: Weight bias and poor body image tend to go hand-in-hand. Patients may internalize society’s stigma against obesity, which causes them to feel embarrassed about their weight and dissatisfied with their appearance. People who struggle with excess weight may also experience anxiety over being judged for how they look.

Physiological issues: There are also obesity-related health factors that can negatively influence mental health. Research suggests that excess body fat and poor eating habits increase inflammatory markers. This heightened inflammation can lead to a higher risk of developing depression and also plays a role in immune system health.
It is common to experience both obesity and mental health issues together. For some people, obesity may contribute to developing certain mental health conditions, while for others mental health issues may lead to weight gain and obesity. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to improve your health that can have positive effects on your weight and mental well-being.
