Bandipora, Feb 24: The dumping of Cow dung on the Banks of Asia’s largest fresh water lake in Saderkoot area of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district paint grim picture as it poses threat to glory of lake.
People in Saderkote Payeen of the district have dumped heaps of cow dung on the banks of Wular. Locals of said areas have appealed authorities to identify the people and take action as per law against them.
Mohd Yaseen, a local told Rising Kashmir that the Wular bund which is being renovated to add glory to the lake is turning into a dumping yard as all the cow dung collected by the locals is being dumped directly into the lake.
He said the cow dung not only impacts the environment but also pollutes water which ultimately can affect fish breeding in the lake.
Another local Mohd Shaban said that even as the authorities are maintaining the cleanliness of lake but at the same time they have failed to keep vigil on the people who dump garbage and cowdung in the lake.
He said that the concerned authorities should identify the people involved in deteriorating the glory and cleanliness of the lake as soon as possible so that it can be saved from further damage.
Meanwhile people living around the lake in the district appealed to the District administration Bandipora to look into the matter.
Coordinator Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA), told Rising Kashmir that they are on toes to keep the lake clean. “It has already been brought under my notice. We are holding awareness programmes in collaboration with PRIs so that people can be made aware how their carelessness can affect not only the lake but also their livelihood”, he said.
