Kargil, Oct 18: In a historic decision, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon has been unanimously elected as the Chairman of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil. The event took place during the inaugural meeting of the newly-formed 5th LAHDC Kargil at the Conference Hall in Baroo.
The Election Department of the Union Territory of Ladakh, in accordance with S.O. 86, convened the first meeting of the 5th LAHDC. The Election Authority/DC Kargil oversaw the proceedings, warmly welcoming all the councillors and congratulating them on their oath of office.
During the meeting, as per rule 94 of the LAHDC Election Rules 1995, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, a councillor from Thasgam-Thuina, was proposed as the Chairman of LAHDC Kargil by Nasir Munshi, councillor of Choskore. This proposal was seconded by Councillor Padum Phunchok Tashi. With only one proposal on the table, the Election Authority declared Dr Jaffer as the unanimous and uncontested candidate for the position of Chairman of LAHDC Kargil.
Following the announcement, a formal oath of secrecy was administered to the newly-elected Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, by Principal District and Sessions Judge Kargil, Iqbal Ahmad Masoodi. The oath ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Election Authority Kargil/District Magistrate/CEO, LAHDC, Kargil Shrikant Suse, Special Judge Mobile Magistrate Kargil Shafeeq Mustaq Lone, and Additional District Magistrate Kargil Ghulam Mohiud din Wani, along with other councillors of LAHDC Kargil.
In a subsequent development, Dr Jaffer officially assumed his role as Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Kargil later in the evening at the council secretariat. The event was attended by the CEO of LAHDC Kargil, all councillors, and various other dignitaries, marking the beginning of his tenure in this crucial position.
