Srinagar, July 03: Chairperson of the Jammu & Kashmir Waqf Board, Dr. Syed Darakhshan Andrabi, spearheaded a clearance drive to address the rental liabilities of tenants occupying Waqf Board properties. The drive, held at the Waqf Complex in Hazratbal, saw Dr. Andrabi receiving payments in cash and cheques directly from shopkeepers.
This decisive action follows the Board’s repeated notices, which failed to elicit the desired response from tenants. Accompanied by Waqf Board Tehsildar and Board Magistrate Ishtiyaq Mohiuddin, Dr. Andrabi engaged with tenants to discuss their outstanding dues.
Demonstrating compassion, Dr. Andrabi ordered a waiver of rentals for an elderly woman selling local pottery, impressed by her determination. However, she maintained a firm stance with other tenants, urging them to settle their balances promptly. “Sealing of commercial units in Waqf properties will begin soon if rental liabilities are not cleared without any delay,” Dr. Andrabi warned.
Many shopkeepers heeded the urgency of the situation, clearing their dues on the spot. Dr. Andrabi reiterated the Board’s policy of not waiving rental liabilities, emphasizing the importance of timely payments to avoid severe consequences.
