Srinagar, Aug 11: The iconic clock tower, also known as the “ghanta ghar” overlooking Srinagar’s city-centre has regained its former glory after undergoing an awe-inspiring renovation as part of the Smart City Project. This grand revitalisation has added a new chapter to the city’s history, infusing a fresh lease of life into its heart. The occasion was marked by the hoisting of the Tricolor on the tower, commemorating India’s 77th Independence Day.
The clock tower, nestled in the heart of the city, has long been a cherished landmark. The tower has donned a new charisma with renewed vibrancy. The flag hoisting ceremony, witnessed by city officials and locals alike, marked a historic moment for Srinagar.
CEO Athar Amir Khan expressed his delight, stating, “The hoisting of the national flag on ghanta ghar is a symbol of pride and unity for the city. This monument, along with Lal Chowk, resonates deeply with the people. Our endeavor is to create spaces that not only honours history but also offer a dynamic, modern experience.”
Despite the challenges faced by the local business community during the maintenance work, confidence prevails. Suhail Shah, vice president of the Lal Chowk Traders Association, shared their anticipation of the completion of the facelift by mid-August. The outcome is expected to be transformative, turning the square into a bustling hangout.
Residents like Shamim Ahmad are enthusiastic about the transformation. Ahmad believes the new Ghanta Ghar will become a gathering spot, much like the popular Polo View market. The renovation, despite temporary inconveniences, has been embraced for the positive change it promises. Once completed, the Ghanta Ghar is poised to be a landmark attracting tourists and locals, putting Srinagar on the map for recreational activities.
The Clock Tower’s renovation is part of an extensive project that aims to upgrade the central business district. With European design influences gracing the architecture, the refurbished Clock Tower is set to be a symbol of elegance and charm for the city. The entire community eagerly awaits the unveiling of the renewed Lal Chowk, a place that will undoubtedly become a bustling tourist hub, attracting visitors from afar.
The Srinagar Smart City Project is not just about restoring architectural landmarks but about igniting hope and excitement among the people, promising a prosperous future for the city, said an official. As the completion date approaches, anticipation and enthusiasm fill the air, as everyone looks forward to embracing Srinagar’s harmonious blend of heritage and modernity in this new era. With the Tricolour fluttering atop the resplendent “Ghanta Ghar”, Srinagar takes a step towards a brighter future, where history and progress coexist harmoniously, he said. “This transformation is not just a renovation but it’s a reflection of a city’s determination to honour its past while embracing a promising tomorrow,” the official added.
