Disobedient Son: Who is responsible—parents or society and where does the responsibility lie?

The responsibility for a disobedient son cannot be attributed solely to parents or society. Both play interconnected roles in shaping an individual

Parents should give their children a good upbringing and take care of them so that they will be in a good state in both religious and worldly affairs. The question of responsibility for a disobedient son is one that strikes at the heart of family and societal dynamics. Is it the upbringing by parents or the influence of society that shapes a child’s behaviour? While there are no definitive answers, exploring both perspectives can shed light on this complex issue.

Role of Parents

Parents play a significant role in shaping child’s behaviour, including their tendency to obey or disobey. The way parents interact with, discipline, and guide their children can either encourage obedience or contribute to disobedience. Parents are a child’s first teachers and play a pivotal role in shaping their values, attitudes, and behaviour. The foundation of a child’s personality is laid in the early years, during which parental guidance is crucial. Lack of discipline, over indulgence, or inconsistent parenting can lead to a sense of entitlement and disregard for authority.

On the other hand, excessively authoritarian parenting may push a child to rebel. Striking a balance between love and discipline is often the key to raising a responsible individual. Moreover, a child observes and imitates the behaviour of their parents. If parents display respect, integrity, and emotional stability, children are more likely to internalize these values. However, if the home environment is rife with conflict, neglect, hypocrisy, it may lead to disobedience and defiance.

Parental behaviour plays important role in child’s disobedience, parents who model disrespect, aggression, or dishonesty teach children to mimic these behaviours. Disobedience can rise when children observe hypocrisy in their parents (e.g. parents breaking rules themselves). Setting overly strict or age-inappropriate rules can frustrate children and provoke disobedience. A stress or conflict-ridden home environment can lead to emotional distress in children, manifesting as disobedience.

Influence of Society

Society plays a significant role in shaping children’s behaviour and can influence their tendency to obey their parents. While parents lay the foundation, society also has a profound influence on a child’s development. Peer pressure, media, and cultural norms can sometimes override parental teachings. In today’s hyper-connected world, children are exposed to a plethora of influences, some of which may conflict with the values taught at home. Society’s growing emphasis on material success and individualism can lead to confusion and moral dilemmas in young minds.

Furthermore, a lack of community support systems, negative role models, and exposure to toxic content on social media can significantly impact a child’s behaviour. Friends and peers have a strong influence on children’s behaviour, especially during adolescence. Negative peer influences can encourage rebellion or disregard for parental authority. Influencers and online platforms sometimes promote values that conflict with parental guidance.

Modern societal values often emphasize individualism and personal freedom, which may conflict with traditional family expectations. Children’s influences by these values may prioritize their independence over obedience to parents. Economic disparities and social inequalities can create stress in families, affecting children’s behaviour. Children in families struggling with financial issues or societal discrimination may express their frustration through disobedience. Community environment also plays important role in child’s disobedience, a neighbourhood with negative influences, such as crime, substance abuse, or lack of positive role models, can encourage disobedience. Children exposed to such environments may mimic undesirable behaviours or disregard parental authority.

A Shared Responsibility

The responsibility for a disobedient son cannot be attributed solely to parents or society. Both play interconnected roles in shaping an individual. While parents must ensure a nurturing and disciplined upbringing, society must provide a supportive and positive environment. Schools, community organizations, and media should work collaboratively to instil values of respect, empathy, and responsibility. It is also essential for parents to remain engaged in their child’s development, even as societal influences grow stronger. Open communication, mutual respect, and understanding can help bridge the gap between parental guidance and societal impact.

Conclusion

A disobedient son is often a reflection of both familial and societal failures. Instead of engaging in a blame game, it is crucial to acknowledge the shared responsibility of parents and society in shaping future generations. By fostering a harmonious balance between these two forces, we can hope to raise individuals who are not only obedient but also compassionate, responsible, and morally grounded.
