Pulwama, Sept 12: Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, IAS, Director of Sericulture J&K, visited the Cocoon Auction Market in Pulwama to review the ongoing auction of this year’s cocoon crop. The auction, a key event for the region’s sericulture industry, saw active participation from local cocoon growers as well as buyers from across Jammu & Kashmir and beyond.
Bhat assessed the auction proceedings, interacting with both growers and buyers. He emphasized the need for transparency and efficiency in the process to ensure that silkworm rearers receive the highest possible returns. Expressing satisfaction with the quality of cocoons produced, he commended the growers and department staff for maintaining disease-free rearing conditions throughout the season.
During his address, Bhat underscored the importance of utilizing the department’s various schemes, including technical support, provision of disinfectants for disease-free rearing, rearing tool kits, and financial assistance for constructing rearing sheds. He also highlighted the department’s commitment to completing rearing shed projects before the winter season to safeguard the livelihoods of farmers.
The visit also fostered improved market linkages, with competitive bidding from buyers outside the region boosting prospects for the local growers. The Pulwama auction market is a key platform for the trade of high-quality cocoons, essential for the region’s sericulture economy.
Bhat assured stakeholders that the department will continue prioritizing support for silkworm farmers, providing training, tools, and financial assistance to improve production and marketability. He was accompanied by senior officials, including the Additional Director of Sericulture Development, Kashmir, and the District Sericulture Officer, Pulwama.
