Srinagar, June 24: The Director of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, Prof Binod Kumar Kanaujia, on Tuesday inaugurated a newly constructed Medical Unit on campus, aimed at enhancing healthcare services for students, faculty and staff.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Registrar Prof Atikur Rehman, Dean Planning and Development Dr Yashwant Mehta, Medical Officer Dr Gawhar Nabi, Executive Engineer Dr Syed Mohsin, AR (Director’s Office and Legal) Mohammad Hazik, Dental Surgeon Dr Urnaib Riyaz, Physiotherapist Dr Tasaduq Nazk, Senior Pharmacist Mohammad Abrar Khan, Counsellor Fairoz Malla, and several other faculty and staff members.
The newly constructed two-storey health centre is equipped with a range of comprehensive medical services including a Medical Officer, Dental Surgeon, Physiotherapist, X-ray Technician, Lab Technician, a state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory, counselling cell, and two ambulances. Funded under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) grant, the project was built at a cost of Rs 5.8 crore. Construction commenced on 26 August 2022 and was completed by May 15.
Following the formal inauguration, Prof Kanaujia toured the facility, inspecting the OPD section, dental clinic, physiotherapy wing, diagnostic laboratory, and counselling area. He interacted with medical personnel and reviewed the infrastructure and operational arrangements. Prof Kanaujia praised the quality of construction and services, calling for regular monitoring, maintenance, and the establishment of a robust feedback mechanism from students to ensure continued efficiency and responsiveness to evolving healthcare needs. He also stressed the importance of health awareness and preventive care within the campus community. “This upgraded medical unit is a significant addition to the institute’s infrastructure and will ensure timely and quality medical care on campus. It reflects our unwavering commitment to the well-being of our students, faculty, and staff. Good health forms the foundation of strong academic performance,” said Prof Kanaujia. Registrar Prof Atikur Rehman described the new health centre as a major milestone in the institute’s journey towards improving campus infrastructure. “This facility reflects our commitment to building a campus where health and education go hand in hand. A strong academic institution must also have strong support systems, and this health centre is a vital part of that vision,” he said.
Prof Rehman expressed gratitude to the Ministry for its continued support and added: “This medical unit, funded under the EWS grant, is not just a building; it is an assurance of care, safety, and preparedness for our entire community.” Medical Officer Dr Gawhar Nabi stated that the new facility offers 24/7 OPD and IPD services, dental care, physiotherapy, and advanced diagnostic capabilities. The laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge technologies, including–Fully Automatic Biochemistry Analyser (Response 910), SD Biosensor F200 (HbA1c), Olympus Microscope, Remi Centrifuge Snibe Maglumi 800 (Hormone Analyser) and Sysmex XN330 (CBC Analyser). “I am personally thankful to the Director, Registrar, and the entire administration of NIT Srinagar for their consistent support and guidance throughout this initiative,” Dr Gawhar added.
