Srinagar, July 3: Residents across Srinagar are growing increasingly anxious about safety hazards caused by non-functional streetlights, which have left numerous neighbourhoods in darkness after sunset.Areas including Downtown, Lal Bazar, Hazratbal, Bemina, Batmaloo, Khayam, Nowhatta, and Hyderpora have reported widespread lighting failures, making evening commutes difficult and unsafe for both pedestrians and motorists. “We are forced to rely on mobile phone flashlights to walk through our own streets,” said Zulfiqar Ahmad of Batmaloo. “It’s hard to see potholes or uneven pavements and there’s always the risk of tripping or colliding with someone.”Asim Wani, a resident of Hazratbal said: “The roads are in poor condition, and without lighting, even walking short distances becomes hazardous.” The problem is especially distressing for women and older citizens. Zoya, a student from Bemina, said: “Returning from tuition classes after dark feels unsafe. The street near my home is not only unlit but also frequented by stray dogs.”Motorists, too, have raised concerns. “Driving through Hyderpora at night is like going in blind,” said Rehan Qureshi. “You can’t see road markings or approaching vehicles. It’s extremely dangerous.”A senior official from Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), speaking anonymously, said that while repair work is underway, delays have occurred due to disruptions caused during the installation of smart meters and underground cables by the Power Development Department (PDD). “Many streetlights remain disconnected, and restoring them requires a specific connector, which we are awaiting from the PDD,” the official said. “We have flagged the issue and progress is being made.” A PDD official confirmed the setback, stating that they are working to reconnect the affected poles in stages. Full restoration is expected soon.”
