Srinagar, Sep 06: Chief Secretary , Dr Arun Kumar Mehta Tuesday kick-started Ist Canon C.E. Tyndale –Biscoe Invitational Football Tournament at Tyndale-Biscoe School Sheikh Bagh campus.
A total of 14 teams from various schools across the valley are participating in the five-day long tournament which started on September 06 and will conclude on September 10 2022. The tournament is being organised by the Tyndale-Biscoe School in honour of Canon Cecil Earle Tyndale-Biscoe who introduced the football game in Kashmir.
Mehta was Chief Guest of the event while as Guest of Honour was Secretary Youth Services & Sports Department Sarmad Hafeez.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the opening ceremony event Dr Mehta said the tournament shall be played among 14 teams from different schools and hoped that the tournament will grow gradually and every player will showcase their talent.
“We had several objectives to meet. The first was to have at least one playfield in each Panchayat that we have almost achieved and the second was that every child in J&K could play. Now our objective is for players to play every season.
“We are expecting participation of 35 lakhs students in the current year in the games. Three years before the number was close to three lacs only, and it is almost 10 times more now,” he said.
He said they will conduct games from school, Panchayat, and district and then up to the UT level. At least six to seven games from different streams shall be conducted for identifying the best talent in UT.
“Besides, identification of the best talent we want everybody to play, when people play, it impacts the development and growth of players,” he said.
Three matches were played today in the first match played between Green Valley Educational Institute and G.D. Goenka wherein Green Valley won by 2-0. The second match was played between Burn Hall School and Tyndale-Biscoe School (Team B) wherein Burn Hall School won by 4-0.
The third match of the day was played between Iqbal Memorial Institute and JK Public School which ended with 1-1 goals scored by both teams. The match was decided by a penalty shootout which saw JK public school win with a
