Ganderbal, Apr 30: Recent heavy rainfall and snowfall in Kullu Mohallah and Fraw areas of Ganderbal’s central district have raised alarm among residents due to land sinking near the power canal, leading to increased anxiety in the community. The adverse weather conditions over the past four days have been identified as the cause of this concerning development.
Riyaz Ahmad, a local resident, emphasized that the Power Development Corporation (PDC) has taken precautionary measures by halting water flow through the canal. However, lingering concerns persist due to the absence of proper fencing and a concrete wall along both sides of the canal, heightening fears of potential risks to nearby communities.
The community recalled a similar incident in 2015 when heavy rainfall resulted in significant damage to residential homes in the area following a major land sinking event near the power canal. This incident led to water entering several households, prompting residents to demand immediate action from the administration to install protective fencing and a concrete wall along the canal to mitigate future risks.
In response to these concerns, the PDC promptly dispatched its assistant executive engineer and junior engineer to assess the situation firsthand. Following their site visit and evaluation of ground conditions, they assured residents that safety measures would be swiftly implemented to prevent any further issues and ensure the security of the local population. The engineers have pledged to address the lack of protective infrastructure along the canal to safeguard the community against potential hazards in the future.
