Several women from rural areas who are part of the Self Help Group (SHG) linked to the Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihoods Mission (JKRLM) in the Sangaldan area of Ramban district are engaged in the preparation of dried pomegranate seeds. These seeds are being sold in various markets across Jammu and Kashmir as well as in other states of India, providing these women with a vital source of income through this initiative.
Shabnam Akther, the cluster coordinator for the Sangaldan area in the Ramban district, informed Rising Kashmir that she oversees more than 275 self-help groups (SHGs) under the Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihoods Mission (JKRLM) in her area. Each self-help group consists of approximately 10 women. The members of these groups engage in various activities, supported financially by the JKRLM, enabling them to earn a livelihood for their families.
“In 2023, a collective of 20 women from different self-help groups established a firm called “Umeed Naturals. All thesw women, who own pomegranate trees, participated in this initiative. Together, we initiated the process of drying pomegranate seeds at our homes. Once the drying is completed, we proceeded to package the dried seeds, which we sell directly to customers across various districts in the Jammu division,” she said.
The Cluster Coordinator indicated that following the increase in demand for the product in the market, they have correspondingly ramped up the production. “This expansion has allowed us to sell to customers across various districts within the division. The heightened demand for our product has been observed not only in Jammu and Kashmir but also in other Indian states. Customers have been purchasing this product from us at standard rates, resulting in a daily increase in our customer base,” she said.
Adding, “Following the successful implementation of this initiative at the grassroots level, we secured a rented space in front of our office to launch this business. Subsequently, we welcomed an additional 30 women from various self-help groups into our firm, ensuring that they too could benefit from this initiative. Currently, a total of 50 women are employed within this firm. These women collaborate to prepare dried pomegranate seeds, which we sell directly to customers on a daily basis. The profits generated from this business are equitably distributed among all 50 women.”
Shabnam said that they are categorizing the dried pomegranate seed product into three distinct packaging options. The market price for 1 kilogram of dried pomegranate seeds ranges from Rs 450 to 500 , while the 500-gram package is priced between Rs 225 and 250, and the 250-gram option is available for Rs 110 to 125. Occasionally, customers express a preference for purchasing the 250-gram package. “In response to market demand, we have ensured that all options are readily available, allowing everyone to acquire our products,” she said.
“The pomegranates utilized in our business are sourced locally. We do not acquire them from markets; instead, we purchase directly from the local residents in our area. This initiative not only benefits the local community but also provides them with a reliable source of income from this crop,” she said.
The cluster coordinator noted that the dried pomegranate seeds produced in Sangaldan are notably more flavorful than those from other regions. Consumers from various states across India, including Jammu and Kashmir, are well aware of the superior taste of the pomegranate seeds. Consequently, they prefer to buy this product directly from them at standard market prices.
“The demand for our products on online platforms, including Flipkart and Amazon, has consistently been strong. We have received favorable feedback from customers across various Indian states. Additionally, consumers on these platforms have shown a preference for purchasing our products online, largely due to the superior taste of our pomegranate seeds compared to other offerings. The Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihoods Mission has been actively selling our products through these online channels. This has also resulted in a significant source of income for us,” Shabnam stated.
Shabnam indicated that individuals purchasing dried pomegranate seeds from are incorporating them into various recipes at home. Dried pomegranate seeds are also referred to as anardana. These seeds are characterized by their sticky and crunchy texture, accompanied by a pleasantly sweet and tart flavor. They contribute a uniquely delightful sweet and sour element to culinary creations.
“Dried pomegranate seeds are an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium, and fiber, making them a nutritious and healthful addition to meals. Furthermore, in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine, dried pomegranate seeds are thought to possess digestive benefits that may help alleviate stomach-related issues,” she noted.
She further said that the rural women of Jammu and Kashmir who lack a source of income are encouraged to visit the nearest JKRLM office in their area. This initiative will enable these women to participate in self-help groups, and JKRLM will offer comprehensive support to those who wish to join and improve their lives.
