NEW DELHI, JAN 29: The Central government has declared ‘Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI)’ as an ‘Unlawful Association’ for an additional five years under Section 3(1) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) 1967. This decision, reflected in Gazette Notification Number S.O. 564(E), is a continuation of the ban imposed on SIMI on January 31, 2019.
The ban is a response to SIMI’s continued involvement in activities fostering terrorism, disrupting peace, and disturbing communal harmony in the country, posing a threat to the sovereignty, security, and integrity of India. Multiple criminal cases have been registered against SIMI and its members under various sections of the law, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
