Srinagar, Apr 26:In a heartening display of civic duty, 102-year-old Haji Karamdin, a resident of Reasi District in Jammu, made his way to Polling Station 166, AC-57 Reasi during the 2nd phase of LokSabha elections to cast his vote.
Welcomed by the presiding officer with red flowers, Karamdin’s appearance at the polling booth underscored his commitment to strengthening democracy. Expressing his joy at participating in the electoral process at his age, Karamdin stated, “I have always voted. This journey is continuing even today at the age of 102.”
Emphasising the pressing issues facing the youth in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly the challenges posed by drug abuse and unemployment, Karamdin highlighted the need for immediate action. He asserted, “The youth in Jammu and Kashmir are suffering because of drug problems and unemployment. Whichever government comes in power should provide jobs to save the younger generation.”
His poignant plea resonated with many, shedding light on the critical intersection of youth empowerment and social welfare. Karamdin’s advocacy for job creation as a solution to the drug menace echoed the sentiments of many citizens striving for positive change in their communities.
Meanwhile, in 105-Khabbal Samba, another remarkable story unfolded. A 97-year-old woman, Janki Devi, accompanied by her grandson, defied the constraints of age and health to exercise her fundamental right to vote in the LokSabha elections.
Captured in a touching photograph shared by Deputy Commissioner Samba on the official handle X, “Smt. Janki Devi’s determination shone brightly as she grasped her grandson’s hand for support while navigating her way to the polling station.” The image swiftly traversed social media platforms, evoking admiration and respect from netizens who hailed her as a true warrior of democracy.
Samba, a constituency within the vibrant tapestry of Jammu, became the stage for this remarkable display of civic duty during the second phase of the LokSabha elections. Despite the challenges posed by age and physical limitations, Janki Devi exemplified the unwavering spirit that resonates within every conscientious citizen.
As the polling booths opened their doors across 2416 stations at the break of dawn, enthusiasm permeated the air, with voters, especially the youth and first-timers, eagerly queuing up to partake in the electoral process. The Election Commission’s meticulous arrangements ensured a seamless and transparent voting experience for all.
The culmination of the voting witnessed a commendable overall turnout of 69.01% in the Jammu LokSabha constituency, reflecting the electorate’s robust engagement with the democratic process.
