Srinagar, Dec 06: The Central Bureau of Investigation seized 1.38 crore in cash from Northern Railway Deputy Chief Engineer Kumar Mittal, who was posted in Lucknow.
The development comes days after the CBI arrested Mittal last week, and during the searches, the sleuths recovered huge sums of cash totaling Rs. 1.13 crore from his possession. Previously, Mittal’s possession was found to be worth 38 lakhs.
According to a CBI spokesman, during further searches at the premises of the Deputy Chief Engineer (Construction), Northern Railway, Lucknow, the CBI has recovered cash of approximately Rs. 1 crore. Cash of Rs. 38 Lakh (approx.) was earlier recovered.
A case was registered on complaint against a Deputy Chief Engineer (Construction) at Northern Railway, Lucknow, on the allegations that he demanded a bribe from the complainant in lieu of passing the bills of his firm engaged in project work at Charbagh, Lucknow.
The CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting an undue advantage of Rs. 50,000/- from the complainant.
Searches were conducted at the premises of the accused, including in Delhi and Lucknow, and the bank lockers, which led to the recovery of huge amounts of cash and other assets.
The arrested accused was produced on December 2, 2022, before the Competent Court in Lucknow and remanded to CBI custody.
The CBI had arrested Mittal on December 1 for allegedly seeking a bribe from the contractor for passing the bills of his firm engaged in project work at Charbagh, Lucknow, they said.
They said the agency arrested Mittal in a trap operation while he was allegedly accepting the bribe.
