JAMMU, May 14: The Border Roads Organization (BRO) marked a significant milestone on Tuesday with the breakthrough in the construction of the 2790-meter-long Sungal Tunnel along the Jammu-Poonch Road, part of National Highway 144A. This tunnel, linking the border areas of Akhnoor and Poonch with the rest of the country, holds immense strategic importance.
Defence PRO, SuneelBartwal, announced the breakthrough ceremony, presided over by DGBR Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan, VSM, who reviewed the overall progress of the tunnel’s construction. The Sungal Tunnel is a crucial component of the ‘Golden Arc Road,’ a vital 200 km stretch connecting South Kashmir and the Jammu region, linking important border districts such as Akhnoor, Rajouri, and Poonch.
Earlier this year, the breakthrough in the Naushera Tunnel on January 28 highlighted BRO’s efforts in providing connectivity to remote areas of Rajouri and Poonch. The completion of such tunnels underscores the project’s importance in enhancing regional connectivity and facilitating smoother transportation along the National Highway.
Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan emphasized BRO’s commitment to spearheading vital road projects, aiming to connect remote areas with major centers in the Jammu-Poonch region. The progress of the Jammu-Poonch link is on track for completion within the next few years, with the overall project expected to be finalized by 2026.
Highlighting the organization’s dedication to strengthening defense infrastructure, Lt Gen Srinivasan reiterated BRO’s role in building and upgrading strategic roads along the International Border (IB), Line of Control (LC), and Line of Actual Control (LAC). He emphasized the motto “Roads Build Nation,” underscoring BRO’s commitment to fostering socio-economic progress through the construction of border road infrastructure.
