Srinagar, Nov 29: The recently concluded 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan on October 23, 2024, played a key role in advancing the disengagement agreement between India and China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), says External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. The minister made the remarks in response to a query in the Lok Sabha.
Dr. Jaishankar revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the summit. During their discussions, Prime Minister Modi welcomed the agreement for complete disengagement in the border areas, addressing issues that emerged in 2020.
“Resolving disputes diplomatically is crucial to maintaining peace and stability in the border regions,” said Dr. Jaishankar, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic efforts in resolving tensions between the two nations.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also acknowledged the progress made, noting that both countries have successfully resolved key border issues through diplomatic and military channels. The disengagement, described as a result of extensive communication between the two sides, is expected to contribute to enhanced bilateral ties and prevent future conflicts.
The Minister assured Parliament that the Indian government has remained transparent regarding developments on the border situation. He highlighted that Defence Minister had briefed Parliament on key milestones in the disengagement talks during 2020 and 2021, and updates have been consistently provided through press releases and official statements.
To rebuild trust, both nations have agreed to utilize existing dialogue mechanisms, including Foreign Minister-level talks and meetings between Special Representatives. Dr. Jaishankar further stated that during the G20 Summit in November 2024, discussions were held on strengthening bilateral cooperation. Plans under consideration include resuming the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, sharing data on trans-border rivers, initiating direct flights between India and China, and increasing media exchanges.
The Minister also assured that mechanisms are in place to address any future misunderstandings along the LAC. These include border personnel meetings, flag meetings, and ongoing consultations through the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs.
