Srinagar, Mar 21: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday expressed deep concern regarding the conduct of certain legislators whose actions are reportedly obstructing the functioning of the House, which results in a “waste of public resources”.
Addressing a press conference at the J&K BJP headquarters here, the party spokespersons G L Raina and Dr Abhijeet Jasrotia, alongside the Media Incharge Dr Pardeep Mahotra, called for adhering to established parliamentary customs, conventions and rules, both within and outside the House.
“Members are expected to uphold the dignity of the legislature through responsible behaviour,” Raina said. “Parliamentary privileges are not absolute and must be exercised with integrity.”
The former MLC cautioned against any misuse for personal or political gain.
Dr Abhijeet Jasrotia in his address highlighted the presiding authority’s role in maintaining order within the House. “The action must be taken against any member who crosses the line,” he said, condemning the alleged use of inappropriate language directed at the Lieutenant Governor by an MLA from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The BJP spokespersons specifically called out AAP MLA Mehraj Mallik for making baseless accusations against the office of the LG and for allegedly offending the religious sentiments of the Hindu community. “Such actions divert attention from pressing issues faced by the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir and reflect poorly on the integrity of the legislative body,” they said.
In light of these events, the BJP is demanding strict action against the erring MLA, including his immediate dismissal from the Legislative Assembly. The party said the silence of the National Conference (NC) on this matter speaks volumes.
The BJP remains committed to upholding the values of accountability and decorum in the legislative process to ensure that the responsibilities entrusted to members are fulfilled for the betterment of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the spokespersons said.
