Srinagar, Oct 31: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general secretary Tarun Chugh on Thursday termed the recent assembly election results in Jammu and Kashmir as a strong endorsement of the party’s policies under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
Chugh in a statement said there has been a huge increase in voter support, asserting that the BJP won 29 seats, up from 11 in the previous election, which he described as a “referendum” on the party’s approach in Jammu and Kashmir.
Highlighting the BJP’s independent campaign strategy, he expressed a willingness to collaborate with newly elected representatives from all parties to further development efforts. However, he reaffirmed the party’s firm opposition to Article 370, which previously granted special autonomy to the region, asserting that the BJP aims to uphold the changes it enacted.
Chugh said the BJP garnered substantial support, surpassing the National Conference in both vote percentage and popularity. “The people of Jammu and Kashmir have rejected any external influence from Pakistan,” he said.
The abrogation of Article 370, the BJP leader said, represents a historic moment for Jammu and Kashmir.
Regarding the future of statehood, Chugh assured that the BJP remains committed to restoring it but called for patience. The Prime Minister and Home Minister have assured about it, he said.
He said the Congress and National Conference lack a clear vision for Jammu and Kashmir. “BJP will continue to prioritise development, peace and security in the region,” he added.
