Srinagar, Jan 24: Chairman of Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and former Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, visited Kochi and participated in a unique spiritual experience by offering prayers at India’s first-ever and oldest mosque in the subcontinent. The Perumal Mosque has stood for over 1400 years.
Accompanied by committee members and the mosque’s Imam, Azad prayed special two rakat namaz, creating a unique blend of history, serenity and spirituality in this historic place, the DPAP said in a statement.
The Imam revealed that the mosque was constructed during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), Azad said.
Despite its age, the Perumal Mosque remains actively in use and attracts a congregation exceeding 3000. Beyond its architectural marvel, the mosque holds immense religious and historical significance, functioning both as a Jama Masjid and a daily prayer space. Its rich history continues to draw people from all religions, symbolizing harmonious coexistence.
After the soul-stirring experience, the former J&K CM offered prayers for peace, unity and prosperity.
