Srinagar, Oct 21: Chairman Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) Ghulam Nabi Azad on Saturday demanded early elections in Jammu and Kashmir, underscoring the importance of restoring representative governance in the region.
Addressing a political rally in Batamaloo, Azad expressed his satisfaction that peace has returned to Jammu and Kashmir, particularly to sensitive areas like Batamaloo, which were previously hotspots of conflict between militants and security forces. He acknowledged the suffering of ordinary citizens and commended the return of tranquillity.
The former chief minister reiterated that holding prompt elections in Jammu and Kashmir is crucial. He stressed that it is unacceptable to govern the UT through an administrative arrangement, as this approach contradicts democratic principles. “No democracy allows this procedure, as only elected representatives have the right to voice the wishes and aspirations of the people,” he said.
The DPAP chief pointed out that this marks the first time in the history of Jammu and Kashmir that elections have been delayed for such an extended period. Despite the peaceful conditions, he questioned the reasons behind the postponement and called on the Central government to explain why democracy has not been fully restored. He emphasized the people’s right to have their own representation and urged an end to their deprivation.
Azad also extended his condolences and prayers to the Palestinian people, condemning the attacks on Gaza. He expressed gratitude to the non-Muslim nations that stood by the people of Gaza during their time of grief. He decried the involvement of nations responsible for maintaining global peace in conflicts that harm innocent civilians, highlighting the need for a more peaceful world.
