Srinagar, March 27: Amid recent disputes and viral social media videos regarding toll collection at the Shutkadi Toll Post in Sonamarg, authorities have issued a clarification to address public concerns and prevent further confusion.
Officials have confirmed that the residents of Shutkadi, Sonamarg, Nilgrath, and Sarbal, as well as government employees working in Sonamarg, are exempted from toll charges. This measure aims to ensure hassle-free travel for locals and government personnel. However, individuals engaged in business or commercial activities in Sonamarg must pay the toll as per established regulations. Officials emphasised that these charges contribute to infrastructure maintenance and development in the area.
A senior official from the Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) said: “The toll collection is being implemented as per the guidelines. Locals and government employees are exempted, but business operators must contribute to the upkeep of public infrastructure. We request the public to follow the rules and avoid unnecessary confrontations.”
Authorities have urged people to cooperate with toll post staff and report any grievances directly to the Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) instead of resorting to public disputes. Reaffirming their commitment to transparency and fairness, officials assured that the toll system is designed to balance regional development needs while respecting local residents’ rights.
Meanwhile, residents of Shutkadi, Sonamarg, Nilgrath, Sarbal, as well as government employees working in the area have hailed the decision stating that they feel relaxed over the announcement. “This is indeed a good decision and we believe that there is no room for the dispute now,” said Imtiyaz Ahmed, a local resident. He said that the decision to exempt the residents of Sonamarg and adjoining areas including Sarbal is a welcome move which is widely hailed by people of Ganderbal district.
