Handwara, Aug 04: In a humanitarian gesture, the Indian Army’s 17th Infantry Brigade based in Nowgam came to the aid of a pregnant Bakarwal woman in the remote Navagam sector near the Line of Control (LoC), ensuring her safe delivery.
The woman went into labour in an isolated area lacking basic medical facilities and road connectivity. Upon receiving the information, Army personnel quickly mobilised and evacuated her to the Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara.
Due to timely medical intervention, she delivered a healthy baby. Both the mother and child are reported to be in good health.
The swift response of the Army not only saved two lives but also drew praise from the local population. Residents of the area expressed their gratitude, acknowledging the Army’s role as a dependable support system in emergencies.
“This act is part of a broader pattern of the Army’s outreach efforts in border areas, a defence spokesperson said. “Over the years, troops deployed along the LoC have frequently stepped in to help civilians during times of need, whether in cases of medical emergencies, natural disasters, or harsh winter blockades.”
He said that from arranging medical camps and supplying essentials to conducting rescue operations, the Army continues to stand by the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Such acts of compassion highlight the Indian Army’s commitment to the welfare of residents living in some of the most inaccessible and underserved areas of the valley,” the spokesperson said.
In areas where civilian infrastructure is often limited, the Army remains a vital lifeline, a local said.
