Ganderbal, Nov 30: After years of delay, the much-anticipated Akhal Kangan Bridge in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district is set to open soon. The completion of the bridge, which connects Kangan to dozens of surrounding villages, was announced by MLA Kangan, Mian Mehar Ali, who shared the news with great enthusiasm.
The MLA confirmed the bridge is likely to be opened to traffic in the coming week. He also announced the approval of a new shortest road connecting Kangan Market to Akhal Bridge via the R&B Guest House, sanctioned by the higher authorities of the R&B Department. Expressing his gratitude, the MLA thanked the officials for their support that this development will provide much-needed relief to the residents of Akhal, Najwan, Kunmal, and other adjoining areas.
“This is a testament to our commitment to reshaping the development of Akhal and its neighboring regions, as promised during the election campaign. It is better late than never,” said MLA Mian Mehar Ali.
The Akhal Kangan Bridge project, initiated in 2010, faced numerous setbacks over the years, missing several deadlines and suffering from periods of inactivity due to unknown reasons. Despite these challenges, the completion of the bridge marks a significant achievement in improving connectivity and infrastructure in the area.
Locals have expressed their appreciation for the efforts of MLA Kangan and the J&K government. “We are grateful for the proactive steps taken to complete the bridge. It will end years of inconvenience for residents who have long awaited better access,” said a local resident.
The first trial run with two loaded tippers was conducted today to test the endurance of the Akhal bridge, and it was a success.
One of the tipper drivers expressed his joy, saying, “It is great news for us that this bridge has finally been completed and will soon be opened. I had prayed that I would live to see the completion of the Akhal bridge, as we have been waiting for it for the past 15 years. Today is a day of joy for all the residents of Akhal and the surrounding areas, as the trial run has been successful.”
He further added, “We are very thankful to MLA Kangan and the government for fulfilling our long-standing demand.”
The opening of the bridge and the newly sanctioned road are expected to enhance transportation, boost economic activity, and significantly improve the quality of life for thousands in the region, said locals.
