Upper reaches receive fresh snowfall
Sgr settles at minus 3.0, Gulmarg at minus 6
Srinagar, Dec 11: Ahead of Chilai Kalan – coldest 40-day winter period – Kashmir is reeling under intense cold wave conditions with Srinagar recorded 3.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The upper reaches also received fresh snowfall, officials said.
As per Meteorological Department data, Gulmarg settled at minus 6.0. Qazigund, minus 4.4°C and Pahalgam, recorded a low of minus 1.8°C and Kupwara minus 4.5°C. Konibal recorded minus 4.5°C.
Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad told Rising Kashmir that the minimum temperature across Kashmir plummeted several degrees below the freezing point on Wednesday. Upper reaches including Sonamarg and Pahalgam recorded light snowfall owing to cloudy weather conditions.
Kashmir is experiencing the coldest nights of the season so far, he said.
He said widespread moderate to heavy snowfall is expected in Kashmir and Ladakh regions till 12th December morning.
He said prevailing cold weather conditions will continue and there will be more dip in minimum temperature in upcoming till 20th December.
The 40-day long period of harsh winter called the ‘Chillai Kalan’ will begin on December 21 and will end on January 31.
As per the traffic advisory, during the past 24 hours, there was slow movement observed on NH-44 due to breakdown of HMVs, single lane traffic at Dalwas, Mehad and between Marog & Kishtwari Pather.
“Subject to fair weather and better road conditions LMVs Passenger/Private Cars/HMVs shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44) viz from Jammu towards Srinagar and vice-versa. TCU Jammu/Srinagar shall liaise with TCU Ramban for road condition,” the traffic advisory said.
