Anantnag, July 25: The Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) Anantnag witnessed a flurry of sporting activity as students competed in inter-zonal and inter-district tournaments across kho-kho, kabaddi, cricket and martial arts disciplines—demonstrating talent, teamwork and tenacity.
Girls’ Kho-Kho (U/17): Qazigund Clinch Title After Close EncountersThe U/17 Inter-Zonal District Level Kho-Kho Tournament for girls proved to be a test of nerves and agility. Zone Srigufwara edged past Zone Verinag by a single point in a gripping opener. Zone Achabal followed suit with a narrow win over Zone Shangus. In the semi-finals, Qazigund defeated Srigufwara by 2 points, while Achabal overcame Dooru by 3. The final saw Zone Qazigund emerges victorious over Zone Achabal in a tightly contested match, securing the championship by 2 points. Achabal settled for the runner-up position.
Girls’ Kho-Kho (U/14): Achabal Outplay Rivals to Take CrownAfter an impressive league-stage win over Zone Bijbehara, Srigufwara reached the semi-finals alongside Achabal and Verinag. Achabal beat Verinag, while Srigufwara overcame Bidder to reach the final. In a thrilling showdown, Zone Achabal lifted the title, edging out Srigufwara, who finished as runners-up.
Kabaddi Boys (U/14): Anantnag March into Provincial SemisAt the Inter-District Provincial Level Championship in Pulwama, the District Anantnag U/14 Kabaddi team, under the guidance of team in-charge Mr Shareef Ahmad Bhat, delivered an outstanding performance. The team secured a 7-point victory over District Kupwara, followed by a dominant 18-point win against Srinagar. Despite a narrow defeat to Baramulla, Anantnag bounced back emphatically, overpowering District Kulgam by 20 points. With three victories from four matches, Anantnag sealed a place in the semi-final, scheduled to face District Pulwama Saturday.
Cricket and Martial Arts Events Add to Sporting BuzzIn Zone Qazigund, an Inter-School Cricket Tournament began at Sports Stadium Wanpora Kewa and Nipora, attracting 341 students. Fasil Farooq (Army Goodwill School Qazigund) and Moheen Maqbool (GMS Nipora) were declared standout performers. In Zone Doru, Martial Arts Selection Trials were conducted at the Amateur Dojo Federation Hall, featuring disciplines such as Wushu, Tang-Ta, Taekwondo, Karate, and Judo. Sixty students participated, and an anti-drug pledge was administered, reinforcing the connection between sports and social responsibility. Meanwhile, in Zone Shangus, the U/14 Inter-School Cricket Tournament got underway at Sports Stadium Nowgam, featuring 8 teams and 96 players. The final is slated for July 26.
