Srinagar, Mar 13: Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Langate, Sheikh Khursheed on Monday expressed concern over the relocation of Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara, alleging that politics has been played over the project from the very beginning, calling it unfortunate.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Khursheed demanded a thorough probe into the expenditure of over Rs 40 crore spent on the project. He further alleged that construction material meant for GMC Handwara, including sand and bajri had been transported to other districts.
The MLA questioned why the location was declared flood-prone at a later stage and not during the initial planning. He said the minister assured him of a thorough investigation into the matter.
The AIP leader strongly opposed the construction of the medical college outside Langate, asserting that the project must remain within the area. He expressed commitment to addressing public issues. “I have consistently raised concerns regarding healthcare and education both inside and outside the assembly,” he said.
Khursheed also highlighted the issue of the transfer policy for Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teachers and the relocation of female teachers outside their districts. He reiterated his demand for a thorough inquiry into the GMC Handwara project, saying a significant amount has already been spent and that locals had cut down trees worth lakhs in anticipation of the project.
The project should not become a source of exploitation for the people, the MLA warned.
