JAMMU, May 29: In a first of its kind of an eye donation case, a family donated the eyes of a deceased family member at the high-tech Super Specialty Hospital of Jammu.
The 30 year old deceased was admitted in Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) Jammu after being seriously injured in a road accident.
He was declared dead and his family, after persuasion by the authorities, consented to donate his eyes. This was the first such case in the Super Specialty Hospital of Jammu, the spokesman said.
“History was created when the eyes of a 30 year old deceased man admitted at Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) Jammu were donated by his family members,” the spokesman said, while adding, “this was the first such case in SSH”.
In house attempt was made by SSH authorities for the first time with support from SOTTO J&K for eye donation, he said.
Dr Rehana Khurshid, Medical Superintendent (MS) and Dr Sanjogita Soodan, Deputy MS, expressed gratitude to the family of the deceased for agreeing to donate corneas on wednesday morning at SSH Jammu.
Irfan Ahmad Lone, Transplant Coordinator of SOTTO took the initiative to motivate the family for corneal donation which gave a new lease of life to two blind patients aged 55 and 60 at GMC Jammu, who received transplants.
Transplant team was led by Dr Sanjay Kai Professor & Head of 2nd Unit, Ophthalmology Department.
Enucleation was accomplished by Dr Malvika (Registrar), Dr Manpreet (Registrar) ,Rifat Hamid (Sister Incharge Eye Bank) and Anjuman MT.
